ON THIS DAY IN METAL: OZZY OSBOURNE UNLEASHES BARK AT THE MOON (1983)
Released: 15 November 1983

There are album anniversaries… and then there are werewolf-shredding, moon-howling, heavy-metal milestones. Today marks the release of Ozzy Osbourne’s third solo album, Bark at the Moon — a record that didn’t just keep the Prince of Darkness alive, but dragged him claw-first into a new era.

🐺 A NEW CHAPTER AFTER TRAGEDY

The early ’80s were rough for Ozzy. After the tragic loss of Randy Rhoads in 1982, the entire metal world wondered if the Ozzman could keep going. Replacing Randy wasn’t just a challenge — it was borderline impossible. But in late ’82, one guitarist stepped into the fire:

🎸 Jake E. Lee

Virginia-born, LA-hardened, and overflowing with swagger, Jake E. Lee had bounced through the hair-sprayed world of Ratt and Rough Cutt, and even had a brief stint with Ronnie James Dio — the very man who replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath. Normally that might’ve been a red flag, but Ozzy clearly saw the spark. He chose Lee over another rising fret-burner: George Lynch of Dokken.

And thank the metal gods he did.

⚡ Jake E. Lee’s Explosive Debut

Right out of the gate, Lee made an impact. His style was flashy, flamboyant, and full of fire — a perfect storm of chaos for a reborn Ozzy. The title track “Bark at the Moon” is the ultimate example: rapid-fire riffs, razor-sharp runs, and enough energy to power a small Midlands village.

Then came the music video — a Hammer Horror-inspired fever dream featuring Ozzy as a werewolf prowling the night. It’s camp, it’s creepy, it’s brilliant. It’s also one of the most iconic metal videos ever made.

🌕 The Album’s Legacy

Let’s be real — Bark at the Moon isn’t the same untouchable beast as Ozzy’s first two Rhoads-era albums (Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman). But to judge it purely by comparison is to miss the point.

This was Ozzy fighting back. This was Ozzy refusing to fade away. This was Ozzy proving he still had bite.

The album sold well, the singles smashed MTV rotation, and Jake E. Lee became a fan favourite overnight.

For many metalheads, Bark at the Moon is the moment the lights came back on after the darkest chapter of Ozzy’s career.

🎤 Final Thoughts

42 years later, the howl still echoes. The riffs still rip. The cover still rules. And Ozzy, full of fangs and fury, remains the wildest werewolf to ever stalk heavy metal.

Happy anniversary to Bark at the Moon — a record that kept the Ozzman alive. Now crank it up and scare the neighbours. 🐺🌕🔥 https://theriffreport.co.uk/15/11/2025/on-this-day-in-metal-ozzy-osbourne-unleashes-bark-at-the-moon-1983/
